“The Hunger Games prequel ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents – gets a release date and more’

During CinemaCon today, Lionsgate confirmed the release date for the upcoming Hunger Games prequel film, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

“The world will find out…who’s a song…and who’s a snake,” read a short trailer, which didn’t show any footage from the upcoming film. Casting has not been confirmed, but a November 17, 2023 theatrical release date has been set. It is based on the prequel novel by Suzanne Collins, released in 2020.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents is set 64 years before the events of the trilogy, beginning on the morning of the tenth Hunger Games, when an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is appointed mentor to a tribute girl from impoverished District 12.

“In this throwback to The Hunger Games, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, years before he became the tyrannical president of Panem, sees a chance to change his fortunes when he’s chosen to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the tribute to the girls from impoverished District 12,” according to the official synopsis.

Based on Collins’ treatment, Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) will pen the film adaptation. Arndt isn’t new to the property, having worked as a screenwriter on the 2013 film Catching Fire.

Nina Jacobson, who co-produced the original Hunger Games trilogy with partner Brad Simpson through Color Force, will produce the prequel, with Collins serving as executive producer.

The Hunger Games film franchise, Catching Fire, Mockingjay-Part 1, Mockingjay-Part 2, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2) has grossed approximately $3 billion worldwide.
