It became a recurring joke among the Swifties if Phoebe Bridgers is going to have a verse for herself on her song on Red (Taylor version) or if she’s just going to sing backing vocals. Well everyone, we have a FULL VERSE of Bridgers and we couldn’t be more excited. Bridgers spoke to Billboard earlier this month on the collaboration: “It was just a dream. I’m so excited people take it at face value the day it comes out because I had tears in my eyes recording it. I couldn’t be more excited. Swift is credited as the only songwriter on the track because “Nothing New” is part of The Vault, songs that were written during the Red era but did not make the cut for the original version. However, Swift can set her own rules on her terms and publish whatever she wants (and on a disc she owns entirely).
While some might say this is the first time a woman has had a verse on a Taylor Swift song, that just isn’t true. On the Speak Now World Tour Live (Brazilian edition), the musician Paula Fernandes sang with Swift in Portuguese on “Long Live”. While the song is currently not available to stream in the United States, it can be viewed on YouTube here.
