Berner upped the ante with his latest album, GOTTI – arguably, his most ambitious to date. With high level features, from Future to Nas, GOTTI arrived after announcing that he was battling cancer. The Cookies Boss underwent surgery last month and is still recovering but, as expected, the fuss doesn’t end for him.
In a recent interview with Cabbages Newsletter, the rapper detailed how the project was made, including getting John Gotti Jr.’s blessing to use their last name. While he was able to get verses from Nas, Rick Ross, and other MCs, he revealed that he almost made a record with Jay-Z.

“I even contacted Jay-Z to get the album,” Berner said. “He didn’t get on the album, but he heard the record, it was put in front of him. And there was a roller coaster ride for about a week where we thought he was going to do a verse to the project. That kind of shit just doesn’t happen.
Another factor that could have played a part in the record not working is that Berner needed the verse to be turned quickly. Given his busy schedule with the Cookies brand and recent health issues, he set a deadline for the verse submission.
“I put time limits on everything. Maybe that’s part of the reason Jay-Z didn’t do the verse. I sent him an amazing record and told him I needed this day. And my boy was joking with me like did you just try to put Jay-Z on demand? I only have X time to work on the music, like with Cookies being what it is, with the clothes, the clothing side of the business, being what it is, I don’t have much time to work on the music, ”he said.

Berner said Memphis Bleek helped put the song in front of Hov. Even with a Deluxe Edition on the way, he doesn’t seem convinced he’ll get a Jay-Z verse. However, he said he appreciated the opportunity nonetheless.
“I don’t think he’s going to do it. You know, it’s a rare thing, ”he added. “But, yell at Memphis Bleek, the fact that I got to put the record in his hands is a life goal in itself, even to keep this conversation going.”
